What makes an OT-led Mom & Baby Group Different?

Updated: Dec 17, 2021

When it comes to having a baby, there are so many choices to make. How will baby be fed? What type of car seat is the best? Which pediatrician should we go to? There are usually even different options for mom and baby groups, such as networks created through birthing hospitals, exercise-geared gatherings, story time at libraries, and special needs support groups.

Some of these groups may be set up in a drop-in style, where moms can come whenever it works in their schedule. This could be pretty useful for women who are juggling a lot and may not be able to commit to a certain schedule. But - it may not ensure that they are getting to know anyone in particular because different people may show up each time.

Many groups are in person, held at various meeting points that moms drive to (libraries, parks, or the hospital). This is great for anyone wanting to make a point to leave the house - though it may take a good amount of getting ready time to prep baby, baby gear, and mom before leaving.

So, how are occupational therapy-led Mom & Baby groups different?

  • a licensed OT with a background in adult and pediatric therapy will help guide discussions to include evidence-based information and tips for moms and babies

  • OTs are great at sharing info in a non-intimidating, easy-to-follow way to help you gain confidence and use practical strategies right away

  • mom topics will not only help you learn ways to care for your postpartum body and mind, but also help grow your self-confidence as a mom and the choices you make for baby

  • baby pro tips are aimed at promoting development and taking away the intimidation factor along the way

  • groups are aimed at building trust, camaraderie, and friendship - with other women and with yourself - grow your mom squad!

What can I expect in Stronger Together Mom & Baby Groups?

  • meeting moms of babies about 0-8 months old, who get what you're going through and live in Richmond/the surrounding areas

  • joining a 7-week series in a closed group - once the series starts, the group members will be the same each week to help grow connection and trust

  • meeting virtually for now (since things are still constantly changing with Covid-19, let's keep those babies and their moms safe but still connecting with each other!) so throw on your leggings, turn on your computer or phone, and join without having to plan for your baby/other kiddos

  • experiencing a judgment-free zone - you can ask questions about your body/mind or baby no matter how "weird" or gross

  • getting to have a "coffee and chat" week where you can really get to know your people

  • learning about important strategies to help your own mental and physical wellbeing so you can take even better care of yourself and your baby: posture & positioning to avoid pain/injuries, strengthening & stretching your postpartum body, prioritizing & managing time for truly valued activities, returning successfully to things you love, & more

  • learning about tips to support baby's development in a non-threatening way: using sensory experiences, songs, movements, & massage for development, managing breast/bottle feeding, digestion/gas, solids, sleep patterns, teething, baby equipment, & more

Remember: different doesn't equal bad. Each person (and each mama!) has unique needs, wants, and visions. If you think a mom & baby group is what you are looking for, mighty mOThers encourages you to join one that makes the most sense for your personal lifestyle.
